Restoration of Dixie
Our southern way is dying, folks. Our sense of community, tradition of hospitality, and our distinct southern culture are all slowly becoming things of the past. And it's not for something better. The only way to restore our heritage is to first re-embrace it ourselves, then to pass it on to our children. It will take time and an intentional effort, but it's worth saving...for us and for generations of Southerners to come.
You can make a difference. Cultures are built, and destroyed, one person at a time. Let's reverse the trend for the better!
Here are some ideas on how to get started.
Start Here, Today, With Your Family & Friends
- Slow down! That's not to say "don't work". Quite the opposite. Work and work hard….but work at the right things, for the right things, in the right way. Stop chasing after the wind and depriving your family of your leadership and presence.
- Eat supper as a family. Celebrate life, family and friends…and good food. Do it together and do it often. Just can't do it every day? Fine, start out with 2-3 days per week, but do it. There will always be things that will try to stop you. You have to decide it's important enough or it just won't happen. Lay down the smartphones, iPads, turn off the TV, and turn on some great southern supper tunes. Talk about your day, share your victories and mourn your defeats…until, that is, you begin to plan your comeback. This time with your family will be gold in your pocket later. I promise. Have a big family meal with extended family once a month or so. This will accomplish the same things while strengthening your broader family ties.
- Get outside and enjoy God's creation. The South is richly blessed with countless natural wonders to share together with your family and friends.
- Grow a garden. Even a small one…or even if it's in pots. Southern People have a strong connection with the land. Those who still do understand from where our sustenance comes (not Wal-Mart or Uncle Sam) which brings a greater appreciation for a full stomach and the Source of all Blessings.
- Read. Find good trustworthy books on Southern history and culture. Read all about what they didn't tell you (or told you wrong) in school about who we are and what we value. Then share what you learn with your family and friends. It's amazing what the truth will do to your perspective.
- Fly a Southern flag. It doesn't have to be the familiar Confederate Navy Jack or Battle Flag. Start with the Stars & Bars or the good ol' Bonnie Blue. Somehow flags just have a way of bringing out your honor and pride. It just serves as a reminder of who you are and what you stand for so that it's a little easier to live it out every day. Buy your flag here.
Spread the Word
Tell your friends and family about our threatened way of life. There's no better way to make an impact than to fix the man, or woman, in the mirror and become an active advocate. Start now and make an impact!
Pick up a few bottles of Antebellum Sweet Black Tea and share it with your family and friends. It's a great way to start the conversation about getting back to what has made us great...made us Southerners.
